Exploring Art: A Student Guide to Viewing Museum Exhibitions is a handbook for upper elementary and middle school students that introduces the basic subject categories (portraits, narratives, abstract art) and vocabulary to promote understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts.
Bridging Communities Program and Exhibition unites people of different ages, cultures, and neighborhoods by bringing together students from two metropolitan-area public schools for a year-long program that combines museum visits, classroom lessons, group discussions, and workshops with artists. It culminates in an exhibition of student work at the museum.
Creative Writing Workshops, held in conjunction with the annual Literary Series, give students from five Washington, D.C. public high schools the opportunity to work closely with visiting authors, who help the participants improve their writing and reading skills, develop individual creativity, and gain practical career information.
Slide Resource Packets and Videos, which relate to the permanent collection, special exhibitions, and ongoing programs, are developed by the museum's Education Department and made available to educators.
PUBLIC PROGRAMS
Women in Music Concert Series highlights performers, and the annual concert co-sponsored with the International Alliance for Women in Music introduces recent works by composers.
Lectures, gallery talks, and symposia by and about women artists introduce new scholarship, complement special exhibitions, or explore aspects of the permanent collection.
Film Series, which are often held in conjunction with special exhibitions, introduce audiences to the contributions of national and international women filmmakers.
Literary Series introduces the metropolitan community to emerging and established women authors, who present readings and discussions of their work for the public and lead creative writing workshops for high school students.
