By Susan Harlan spacer Song Lines

By Susan Harlan

Susan Harlan, a painter, printmaker and book artist who lives in Portland, Oregon, won the Library Fellows award for 1993. Her book was inspired by the earliest maps of Australia. In the artist's words, "Song Lines represents collected symbols and images of dreams and forms a kind of map of the emotional, intellectual, and physical connections that bind us to each other and to the universe." The book includes 25 handprinted pages and is bound in black sheepskin and Italian linen cloth. A map of an unknown territory, cast of anodized aluminum, is glued and riveted to the cover.
