The National Museum of Women in the Arts collection online contains data on more than 3,000 works of art and over 600 artists. We are expanding this database regularly.
General Tips
Searches are not case sensitive, but are sensitive to accents and other foreign characters, for example entering Renee will not find artists called Renée.
If you are having problems finding the artworks or artists you require try entering just one whole or partial word from the name or title, e.g. try using 'Kahlo' instead of 'Frida Kahlo'.
Simple Search
The simple search available on all Collection pages will return all entries of artists and artworks in the collection containing the characters entered into the search box. To perform a simple search first enter:
- a whole or partial name, e.g. Georgia, Georg, Keeffe, O'Keeffe or Georgia O'Keeffe.
- a whole or partial artwork title, e.g. moonlight, moon.
Then click "Go" to submit your search.
Advanced Search
Using the Advanced Search you can specify a variety of parameters and restrictions in searching for artists or artworks. To perform an advanced search first decide whether you wish to search by artist or search by artwork. The list of artists or artworks returned by an advanced search will match all of the search criteria that you have selected.
If you wish to search by artist you can restrict the search by:
- entering a whole or partial name in the "First name" or "Last name" fields, e.g. Elaine and/or just Elai in the "First name" field or Koon, Kooning, De Kooning in the "Last name" field.
- entering a nationality in the Nationality field, e.g. Russian or Polish.
- entering dates in the "born between" field e.g. "1600" and "1900" will return all artists who were born between these dates. Note not all artists in the collection have life dates recorded. Artists with unknown life dates will not be available by searching using this method.
If you wish to search by artwork you can restrict the search by:
- entering a whole or partial title, e.g. moonlight, moon into the "title" field.
- entering dates in the "work made between years" field e.g. "1600" and "1900" will return all artworks that were made between these dates. Note not all artworks in the collection have a date recorded, these entries will show "n.d." meaning "no date" and are not searchable.
- Choose from the "medium class" drop down menu e.g. "painting" or "textile" to view works of a specific medium.
- Choose a subject from the "subject" drop down menu e.g. "Botany" or "Nude" to view works of a specific subject.
Enter your search by clicking "Search Now" or click "Clear Search" to start again.
